![]() Following the Canaries 3-1 victory at Blackpool on September 26th former Norwich City striker Chris Sutton claimed that the Canaries would "win the Championship in a canter". Talk about the kiss of death! Since Sutton's comments we've won just once and scored five goals. Neil Adams' appointment as permanent Norwich City manager is beginning to turn into the huge disaster that many concerned Canary fans were predicting (myself included). As I write we are perched worryingly in 10th position in the Championship, 6 points behind the leaders Derby County and 4 points behind the Scum. Let's not get carried away, a couple of wins and we could easily find ourselves back in the promotion mix, such is the closeness of this league. On the 22nd of May when Neil Lennon quit Celtic and everybody thought he was coming to Carrow Road the announcement of Neil Adam's promotion from caretaker to permanent manager on a Sky Sports News stream felt like a kick in the teeth to Canary fans after all the rumours about Neil Lennon, Malky Mackay and Gianfranco Zola and so on. However to be fair to the former Norwich youth team boss and Radio Norfolk pundit was doing better than expected (even topping the league on a couple of occasions) until the cracks started to show including the 4-0 thrashing at Middlesbrough and the 2-1 defeat at the City Ground, a game the Canaries somehow managed to lose after being only minutes from victory. The trouble with Adams is that he has no experience in football management at the top level and can't afford to make too many mistakes. It's no good an easily pleased Norwich fan called Linda ringing Canary Call on Radio Norfolk and telling us that Neil is finding his feet and should be given time. Neil Adams I'm sure will develop into a good coach over time but right now we need someone with experience at this level and someone who doesn't continually state the obvious. So what if we were the better team, at the end of the day it's goals that win matches, not the amount of possession you have. Time and time again we get turned over by so called inferior opposition or teams going through a bad run. When we went to Fulham on October 18th they were lying in the bottom three, so surely this would have been the ideal time to register our first win against the Cottagers since 1986 but you know the rest. When we went to the City Ground on November 8th Nottingham Forest hadn't won for 10 games but we still got turned over. Why do we fold so easily? Have we learnt anything from last season? No we obviously haven't. After a promising and better than expected start to the season reality has kicked in again. It's no good sacking Mark Robson (the first team coach), surely the manager should be the one paying the price. Adams has made costly mistakes and can't be allowed to make any more. If he remains in the job Neil Adams has got to work out how to break down teams who come to Carrow Road with the sole intention of putting 10 men behind the ball and keeping his fringe players happy. A classic example of this is Gary Hooper. The former Celtic striker and last season's top scorer has come back from injury and is struggling to get in the starting line-up. His former boss Neil Lennon (now in charge of Bolton Wanderers of course) recently sounded out a loan move for Hooper through the press. This was clearly a deliberate tactic by Lennon to unsettle the player, so hopefully Adams would have been aware of this. If Hooper continues to be only an occasional substitute I can definitely see Lennon getting his wish. When Adams was first appointed Joe Royle was brought in as a football consultant for his valuable experience. But just over 6 weeks later Royle left Carrow Road to work for the backroom staff at Everton, the club where he made his name. Adams could definitely benefit from someone with an equal pedigree to assist him. Camerone Jerome has obviously been a huge success since joining the Canaries, but what about Neil Adams' other signings? Well, Lewis Grabban started off brightly and became an instant fan's favourite when he scored the winner at Portman Road on August 23rd 2014, however some fans might argue that he misses more chances than he scores and he has already missed two penalties. So despite scoring 6 goals so far for the club the jury is still out on Grabban. Gary O'Neill appears to be a valuable acquisition. He had to wait for his chance but the former Q.P.R midfielder was impressive as a second half sub at Sheffield Wednesday and performed well in his first start in the home win against Bolton which saw the team end a worrying run of 10 games without a first half goal. The win at Portman Road was soured somewhat by the injury to Ryan Bennett. However Adams wasted no time in bringing in reinforcements at the centre of the defence with the signings of Jos Hooiveld (on loan from Southampton), Ignasi Miguel from Arsenal and Carlos Cuellar who used to play for Glasgow Rangers and Aston Villa. However despite the signings Adams opted to play captain Russell Martin (pictured below scoring against Leeds. © Photo by Norwich City Heaven) alongside Michael Turner in the centre of defence until Martin had a stinker at the Riverside Stadium.
Kyle Lafferty has scored a few goals for Northern Ireland during their European Championship qualifying campaign but he's yet to get on the scoresheet for the Canaries. He may give 110% and get stuck in but Laffery mostly plays in a wide position away from the main striker and is always getting himself into trouble with 6 bookings already. In fact Neil Adams has already withdrawn Lafferty on a couple of occasions to prevent the big man getting sent off. Generally Adams' buys have been disappointing so far, except for Jerome who has become a fan's favourite. The board mustn't leave it too long before they make a change or promotion will slip away. Tony Pulis is clearly the fan's choice to replace Adams but I'm not sure he would want to manage in the Championship. Malky Mackay appears to off limits because of his recent racist/sexist/homophobic text messages controversy but he's got a proven track record in the Championship and would be a better fit than Adams. Former West Brom manager Steve Clarke would also be a good appointment. | ||||
